Port Magee & Waterville

To be completely honest, I solely chose this place to catch a boat out to Skellig Michael to see puffins. Waterville is a little isthmus, or a narrow strip of land between two bodies of water. One side is the Ballinskelligs and the other Lough (lake) Currane.

Skellig Michael is an island about 9 miles off the coast. No humans lives there, and it is home to rare animals. I was even more excited when our b&b host told us her husband did eco conservation on the island for years. Another fun fact is that the island gets hurricanes, which happened while I visited.

We weren’t able to sail because of rough water as it’s too dangerous to dock. I took advantage of the landscape and walked down to a jetty by the lake to read. At night we wandered downtown where we found a status of Charlie Chaplin whom owned a summer home in Waterville. Each year they hold a look alike contest which Chaplin entered and hilarious enough lost.

Best & Breakfast – Currane Lodge

This is a photo of Currane Lodge taken from the lake. Ann McCarthy was our host, she and her husband are very knowledgable about the Skellig Islands and the Ballinskelligs. Their home is filled with photos Mr. McCarthy took while working on the island. She offered to phone the boat operator for us to see if they were planning on sailing the next day with the harsh water conditions. Our room was at the end of the hallway and only one other couple stayed the same night as us so it was very quiet.

Food & Drink…

O’Dwyer’s Pub: This pub is named after an Irish Olympian. We found that bar themes were either sports or music atmospheres.

Fisherman’s Bar: Our B&B host recommended this place and they were showing a rugby match on a large projector screen. The staff was really nice and helped explain a few things about the game
