Cobh & Cork

Cobh is well known for being last port the titanic stopped to pick up passengers before heading out to sea. You can visit the museum where you’re given a ticket with a passengers name when you enter the museum and at the end they tell you about the person and whether or not they survived.

Gaelic Football

We decided to experience some of the local culture and see a rugby game. These guys are the real deal. Their club venue is called the Paddocks. You won’t find it on a map but ask any local and they’ll tell you right where to go.

We walked into the club to grab a beer before the game and there was a wedding going on as well. We felt intrusive at first but they were literally unphased by all the fans smack dab in the middle of their reception. The band was playing 70’s American songs all evening.

First of all you could walk outside right up to the field with a glass yes, glass of beer to watch the game. Awesome. Secondly, we had a first row seat to all the rather finer details of the game including puking players, rashers hanging out of pants that were pulled down in a tackle, and a few injuries that were probably more like torn ligaments but completely played off like nothing more than scraped knees.

Cashel

We had lunch at Feehans. The local pubs hand out vouchers for Cashel, and there are free parking options downtown which is a short walk.

Hore Abbey Ruins

These ruins were on a field a short hike from the rock of Cashel and through massive cow plops. These were free and we got to climb all over them.

Bed & Breakfast – Mount View

Our host Mrs Noreen Hickey is a sassy, stylish woman who tells it like it is. She moved our room upstairs where we had a beautiful view of the Cobh port where huge freight and cruise ships regularly pass through.

Gilbert’s

We ate dinner at Gilbert’s and I had the spiciest chili wings I’ve ever had, my mouth was on fire. I also got the guinness stew, again not impressed by the lack of flavor but the broth was a nice texture. We had lunch earlier at the Commodore which was a fishing themed bar and hotel. I just got a chicken caesar salad that was tasty.
